Why documenting a process is worth it, not just keeping it in your head

The cost of an untransferred process

When only one person knows how to do something correctly, any absence of theirs, vacation, sickness, leaving, becomes a real risk for the business, not just a temporary inconvenience.

What's worth documenting, at minimum

  • How to onboard a new client, step by step.
  • How to issue and follow up an invoice through to payment.
  • How to handle a reported issue from receipt through to resolution.

It doesn't have to be perfect

Useful documentation is clear enough for someone else to follow, not a perfectly polished document. A simple, updated draft beats an elaborate document that's never finished.

Bottom line

Documenting processes isn't wasted time, it's time invested once that saves time every time someone new has to pick up that responsibility.
